Shri Udupi Krishna Temple Karnataka

Shri Krishna Matha (Temple) in Udupi stands as an extremely sacred, unique, and historically renowned center of the Dvaita Vedanta school of Sanatan Dharma. Located on the coastal belt of Karnataka, India, this holy abode was established in the 13th century by the great Vaishnava saint, philosopher, and social reformer Jagadguru Shri Madhvacharya. The captivating monolithic black stone deity of Lord Shri Krishna enshrined in the main sanctum depicts his child-form (Balakrishna), holding a churning rod (churning stick for curd) in one hand and a rope in the other. The greatest and most unique spiritual protocol of this temple is that the deity is never viewed directly; instead, devotees catch a glimpse of Thakur Ji exclusively through a beautifully carved silver window with nine holes, known as the "Navagraha Kindi" or "Kanakadasa Kindi". A peaceful atmosphere is strictly maintained inside the sanctum sanctorum, keeping in mind the tender nature of child-Krishna. The management of this entire temple functions like a living ashram, the leadership of which rotates sequentially every two years through the historic "Paryaya Festival" among the revered ascetics of the "Ashta Mathas" (Eight Monasteries) established by Madhvacharya Ji. It is believed that catching just a single glimpse of Balakrishna through this sacred Navagraha window removes all the miseries of human life and grants inner peace.

* The Miracle of Kanakadasa Kindi: The most famous feature of the temple is the Navagraha Kindi (window). According to the legend, when Kanakadasa Ji, a supreme devotee belonging to a lower caste, was denied entry into the temple, he sat near the back wall of the temple and started singing Krishna bhajans while weeping. Pleased by his unalloyed devotion, the deity of Lord Krishna turned around on its own, and a crack appeared in the wall, allowing Kanakadasa to have darshan. Today, a beautiful silver window has been crafted at that very spot.
* The Unique System of Ashta Mathas: For the smooth functioning of the temple, Shri Madhvacharya Ji had handed over eight different monasteries to his eight chief disciples. These eight mathas—Palimaru, Admaru, Krishnapura, Puttige, Shirur, Sode, Kaniyooru, and Pejavara Matha—manage the worship and arrangements of the temple sequentially for two years each without any dispute.
* Glory of the Akhanda Deepa (Eternal Lamp): The main lamp burning continuously in front of the deity of Balakrishna inside the sanctum sanctorum has been lit uninterruptedly for the past 700+ years. This eternal flame was originally lit by Shri Madhvacharya Ji himself.
* Anna Brahma Kshetra (Massive Free Feast): The Udupi Krishna Temple is world-famous for its Mahaprasada (free sattvic food). Here, tens of thousands of devotees are served delicious, pure sattvic food daily with great respect in huge dining halls, earning Udupi the title of "Anna Brahma".

The daily service protocol at Udupi Krishna Matha is extremely strict and organized. A total of 14 special poojas and several grand aartis are performed regularly here from early dawn until night:
1. Nirmalya Visarjana & Usha Kaala Pooja (05:00 AM to 06:00 AM): This is the first main service of the day, in which the previous day's flowers are removed, and the holy bath (Abhisheka) of Thakur Ji with water and Panchamrit is performed, followed by the first aarti of dawn.
2. Akshaya Patra & Eradane Pooja (07:00 AM to 08:30 AM): The second phase of the morning worship, in which Balakrishna is offered fresh cow milk, curd, and special milk sweets, followed by a camphor aarti.
3. Mahapooja & Main Midday Aarti (11:00 AM to 12:30 PM): This is the most important and royal worship of the day. The Lord is offered various types of rice, payasam (kheer), and South Indian sattvic delicacies, after which the grand Maha Aarti is performed using massive multi-tiered brass lamps.
4. Chamara Seva & Shayanotsava Aarti (07:00 PM to 09:00 PM): The sanctum doors reopen in the evening to the sounding of conch shells and the beat of traditional instruments. In the final hour of the night, Thakur Ji is seated in a silver cradle (swing), and the Shayan Aarti is performed while chanting gentle lullabies to put him to sleep.

The complex of Udupi Krishna Temple is a wonderful and grand specimen of traditional Kerala and Coastal Karnataka temple architecture. The roofs of the temple are covered with fine wooden carvings and copper plates. A large water tank called "Madhwa Sarovar" is located around the main temple, where floating chariot festivals (Teelotsavam) are organized during festivals. Beautiful silver and gold work has been done at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. With the cooperation of the Ashta Mathas, a queue system has been scientifically designed for smooth darshan of the devotees, making it easy to control heavy crowds even during festivals.

* Paryaya Festival: This is the largest and most historic festival of Udupi, celebrated every two years on January 18th. On this day, the seer of one matha hands over the temple keys and the 'Akshaya Patra' to the seer of the next matha. On this occasion, the entire city of Udupi lights up, and massive cultural processions are taken out.
* Shri Krishna Janmashtami & Vitla Pindi: Janmashtami, which falls in the month of Bhadrapada, is celebrated here with great pomp and show. The next day, the 'Vitla Pindi' festival takes place, in which large earthen pots are filled with curd and hung on high poles, and people dressed as cowherds break them with sticks (similar to Dahi-Handi).
* Ratha Yatra (Rathotsava): During the winter season, especially on the occasions of Champa Shashti and Makar Sankranti, the festival deity of Lord Krishna is placed on huge, beautifully decorated wooden chariots and pulled around the outer path of the temple (Ratha Beethi).

Udupi is directly and beautifully connected to all major parts of the country through national highways, the Konkan Railway, and the airways network:
* By Air (Flights): The nearest international and domestic airport is Mangaluru International Airport (IXE), located approximately 55 kilometers away from Udupi. Prepaid taxis, cabs, and state transport Volvo buses from Mangaluru Airport drop passengers directly to Udupi via National Highway 66 (NH-66) in just 1 to 1.5 hours.
* By Train (Railways): Udupi has its own railway station, Udupi Railway Station (UD), which is a major station on the famous Konkan Railway network. This station is directly connected to Vande Bharat, Rajdhani, and superfast trains coming from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Kochi, and Goa. The distance from the station to the main temple is only 4 kilometers, from where auto-rickshaws and cabs are easily available.
* By Road (Bus or Car): Udupi is situated on National Highway 66 (NH-66) and National Highway 169A. Luxurious KSRTC sleeper and Volvo buses run continuously from Bengaluru (approx. 400 km), Mangaluru (55 km), and Mysuru to Udupi. Spacious parking lots have been built near the temple for devotees arriving by private vehicles.
