The aarti "Jai Ambe Gauri" is an immortal devotional masterpiece composed by Swami Shivananda. It stands as a glorious tribute to Goddess Amba, the primordial Mother of the universe (Adishakti). This hymn captures the exquisite beauty, supreme power, and compassionate protection of Goddess Durga. Revered continuously by the holy trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—Goddess Amba is depicted with a golden complexion (Kanak Samaan Kalevar), adorned in brilliant red garments, wearing vermillion on Her forehead and a pearl upon Her nose. Her radiant form reflects the luminescence of millions of suns and moons.
The middle stanzas celebrate Her cosmic heroic deeds as recorded in the sacred Devi Mahatmyam (Durga Saptashati). Mounted upon Her majestic lion (Kehari), She wields weapons to eradicate evil forces—annihilating demons like Mahishasura, Shumbha, Nishumbha, Dhumralochana, Chanda, Munda, Raktabija, and Madhu-Kaitabha, thereby restoring righteousness and fearlessness across the three realms. The text also beautifully unifies the divine forms of the Goddess, acknowledging Her as Brahmani, Rudrani, Lakshmi (Kamalaraani), and Shiva's chief consort (Shiv Patraani), sung about in the Vedas and Agamas.
