The procedure for performing Aarti is simple, but scriptures specify a particular method for it. First, three floral offerings (Pushpanjali) should be made while chanting the Moola Mantra (main mantra) of the deity being worshipped. Following this, Aarti should be performed accompanied by the sounding of musical instruments like conch shells, bells, cymbals, gongs, and drums, along with chants praising the Lord.

A clean and auspicious vessel/lamp should be used for Aarti, lit with ghee or camphor. Scriptures mention using an odd number of wicks for the Aarti lamp.

Describing this method, the scripture states:

Tatascha Moolamantrena Dattvaa Pushpaanjalitrayam।
Mahaaneeraajanam Kuryaanmahaavaadyajayaswanaih॥

Prajwalayet Tadartham Cha Karpoorena Ghritena Vaa।
Aaraartikam Shubhe Paatre Vishamaanekavartikam॥

Meaning: After offering Pushpanjali three times with the Moola Mantra of the deity, perform Maha-Neerajana (grand Aarti) accompanied by loud musical instruments and acclamations of victory. For Aarti, light an odd number of wicks using camphor or ghee in a pure and auspicious vessel.

In simple terms, the procedure can be understood as follows: first offer Pushpanjali to God, then light a lamp or camphor and perform Aarti with faith and devotion. Bells and conches may be sounded, and chants of praise recited during Aarti. Finally, the holy flame of Aarti is reverently accepted.
