Goswami Shri Kalyan Devacharya Ji Maharaj

Goswami Shri Kalyan Devacharya Ji Maharaj, the great saint belonging to the sacred lineage of Brahmarshi Saubhari, will always be remembered in the glorious history of Baldev Dham. According to religious traditions, Lord Shri Dauji Maharaj Himself appeared to him in a divine dream and instructed him regarding the manifestation of His sacred underground deity form.

Goswami Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj was born in Samvat 1595 into a devout Brahmin family on the sacred land of Braj. From his childhood, he was deeply inclined towards devotion, spiritual practices, and contemplation. During his adolescence, he performed rigorous penance and worshipped Lord Surya Dev with deep devotion, dedicating his life to the path of spiritual discipline and devotion.

According to religious tradition, Lord Shri Dauji Maharaj, pleased with his unwavering devotion and intense penance, appeared to Goswami Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj in a divine dream and revealed the sacred indication of His manifestation. Following this divine command, Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj discovered the sacred deities of Lord Shri Dauji Maharaj and Mata Shri Revati Ji beneath an ancient banyan tree in Vidrumvan. This sacred event holds a special place in the religious traditions and spiritual heritage of Baldev Dham.

When an attempt was made to move the sacred deities of Lord Shri Dauji Maharaj and Mata Shri Revati Ji to another location, they gave a divine indication that they were meant to remain and be worshipped at that very place. Thereafter, on the auspicious day of Margashirsha Purnima in Samvat 1638, the sacred deities of Lord Shri Dauji Maharaj and Mata Shri Revati Ji were formally consecrated in a simple hermitage, known as a Parnakuti, following traditional rituals, prayers, and religious ceremonies. In time, this sacred site became established as one of the foremost places of religious devotion in Baldev Dham.

In time, through the unwavering devotion, deep penance, and selfless service of Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj, a magnificent temple dedicated to Lord Shri Dauji Maharaj was established on this sacred land. The spirit of devotion and service that Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj embodied continues to be honored with deep reverence to this day through the worship of Lord Shri Dauji Maharaj and the sacred traditions lovingly preserved at the temple.

The Birth and Family Background of Shri Kalyan Dev Ji

On the sacred land of Braj, where the eternal traditions of devotion and spiritual practice have flourished beneath the divine presence of Shri Giriraj Ji, a blessed child was born in Samvat 1595. Born in the sacred village of Bharna Khurd, nestled at the foothills of Shri Giriraj Ji, to Pandit Abhay Ram Ji, this child would go on to attain a distinguished place in the spiritual tradition through his profound devotion, penance, and selfless service.

Although Pandit Abhay Ram Ji was a simple farmer by profession, he was deeply rooted in religious values, faith, and spiritual traditions. It was in this sacred and virtuous environment that young Kalyan was raised. His birth brought an atmosphere of joy, auspiciousness, and divine grace to the family. Moved by this sense of happiness and well-being, his parents named him ‘Kalyan’, meaning welfare and auspiciousness. Little did they know that this name would one day beautifully reflect the very essence of his life, as he would become a source of inspiration for countless devotees on the path of devotion, spiritual practice, and selfless service.

The ancestral lineage of Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj is traditionally associated with the ancient village of Tagara in Rajasthan. According to traditional belief, his great-grandfather, Pandit Prithviraj Sharma, originally belonged to Tagara. Local traditions associate the village of Tagara with Taganya, the wife of Maharshi Saubhari Ji. It is believed that Taganya’s palace was situated in this region and that, over time, the name of the place came to be known as ‘Tagara’, derived from her name. According to this tradition, Pandit Prithviraj Sharma regarded himself as belonging to the lineage associated with Taganya.

In the course of time, Tagara was struck by a devastating plague epidemic. The outbreak severely affected life in the village, forcing many families to leave their ancestral home and seek safer places to settle. During this difficult period, Pandit Prithviraj Sharma migrated from Tagara and settled in Bharna Khurd in the Braj region. According to tradition, Bharna Khurd was already closely associated with the religious and familial traditions of the Saubhareya Brahmins.

Families who migrated from Tagara to Braj began using the name ‘Tagara’ along with their names in order to preserve their ancestral identity and keep the memory of their native village alive. Over time, this designation came to be known as ‘Tagare’. Even today, in some places, ‘Tagare’ is regarded as a lineage or clan-based identity, while according to the traditional genealogical lineage, their original gotra is considered to be Angiras.

The Ancient Surya Temple and Surya Kund of Bharna Khurd

The Surya Temple and Surya Kund hold a special place in the ancient religious heritage of Bharna Khurd. According to traditional beliefs, Surya Kund was once a vast sacred water reservoir spread across nearly 20 acres and was also known as the ‘Patal-Tod Kund’. Ancient Braj traditions mention around twelve such sacred kunds in Braj and the surrounding region, reflecting the area’s ancient water heritage as well as its deep-rooted religious traditions.

Braj folklore also preserves the belief that during the great war of the Mahabharata era, these ancient kunds served as important sources of water for the vast armies gathered for the battle. Over the centuries, many of these sacred water bodies gradually lost their original form due to encroachment and neglect. Surya Kund is also closely associated with the Radha-Krishna traditions of Braj and is traditionally regarded as a witness to the intimate divine meetings of Shri Radha Ji and Shri Krishna Ji. According to religious tradition, Shri Radha Ji would bathe in this sacred kund and worship Surya Dev every day. The many legends and devotional traditions associated with Surya Kund and the sacred natural sites surrounding it continue to live on among devotees, keeping alive the ancient spiritual heritage of Bharna Khurd.

The Penance of Siddha Baba and the Grace of Shri Radha Ji

Mata Sushila Devi Ji, the wife of Pandit Abhay Ram Ji and the mother of Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj, would regularly visit the ashram of a Siddha Baba in Bharna Khurd to participate in kirtans and devotional bhajans. A touching and spiritually significant story associated with this Siddha Baba is also preserved in Bengali literature and the religious folk traditions of Braj.

According to tradition, shortly after his child marriage, the Baba renounced worldly life and came to the sacred land of Radha Kund in Braj, where he immersed himself in spiritual practice. Bharna Khurd is also traditionally regarded as being connected with the sacred traditions of Radha Kund. At a Siddha ashram in this region, the Baba devoted his life to bhajan, meditation, and intense spiritual austerities. When his young wife came to know that he had renounced his home, she followed him to Radha Kund in search of him. At that time, the Baba was immersed in meditation and spiritual practice inside a cave.

His young wife humbly requested that she did not wish to disturb his spiritual practice and would return after receiving his darshan just once. However, fearing that meeting her might awaken worldly attachment, the Baba refused to come out of the cave and meet her. Deeply hurt by his refusal, she is said to have cursed him with leprosy. According to tradition, some time later, the Baba was afflicted with a severe form of leprosy and endured great physical suffering.

One day, overwhelmed by the unbearable pain of his illness, the Baba earnestly remembered Shri Radha Ji. According to religious tradition, Shri Radha Ji appeared before him and explained that his wife was no less devoted to spiritual austerity than he was. By hurting his wife’s feelings and rejecting her with disregard, he had also dishonored a woman, and therefore he was required to face the consequences of his actions.

It is believed that Shri Radha Ji then showed him the path to freedom from his suffering. She instructed him to undertake a barefoot circumambulation of the village every day for six months. He was to continue the parikrama throughout the day and, wherever he reached at sunset, he was to rest there for the night and resume the circumambulation from the same place the following morning. He was also instructed to humbly accept the prasad offered by the people of Braj. After Shri Radha Ji disappeared from his sight, the Baba immediately resolved to undertake this difficult spiritual discipline and began his parikrama.

Despite the scorching heat, the burning earth beneath his feet, and the painful wounds that developed on his feet, the Baba continued his daily parikrama without wavering from his resolve. According to religious tradition, after six months of this intense spiritual discipline and arduous circumambulation, he was completely cured of his leprosy. Thereafter, he would travel to Barsana every day to receive the darshan of Shri Radha Ji and express his heartfelt gratitude for Her divine grace.

The Blessing Received by Mata Sushila Devi Ji and the Birth of Shri Kalyan Dev Ji

One morning, Siddha Baba was returning to his ashram from Barsana. At the same time, Mata Sushila Devi Ji was on her way to the fields carrying food for her husband, Pandit Abhay Ram Ji. That day, she had only a small amount of food with her. Along the way, she respectfully bowed before Siddha Baba. The Baba asked her to offer him a little food as well. Mata Sushila Devi Ji felt hesitant, as the food she was carrying was barely enough for her husband.

Seeing her hesitation, the Baba reassured her and said that she need not worry, as there was sufficient food in the container. When Mata Sushila Devi Ji opened it, she was filled with astonishment. The container was miraculously filled with puris and a variety of other dishes. Deeply moved by this unexpected occurrence, she stood amazed. The Baba partook of some of the food and, before leaving, blessed Mata Sushila Devi Ji with the words, “May you be blessed with Kalyan”—a blessing meaning well-being, auspiciousness, and divine grace.

Mata Sushila Devi Ji later narrated the entire extraordinary incident to her husband, Pandit Abhay Ram Ji. According to tradition, auspicious and positive changes soon began to unfold in their family life. Some time later, Mata Sushila Devi Ji gave birth to a radiant and spiritually blessed child. The family regarded his birth as a symbol of the divine grace, welfare, and auspiciousness that had entered their lives. With this sentiment, they named the child ‘Kalyan’, who would later become renowned as Goswami Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj. This sacred event is traditionally believed to have taken place in Samvat 1595.

Beginning of Intense Penance at the Age of 15

From an early age, Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj was naturally drawn more toward devotion, spiritual practice, and contemplation than toward worldly pursuits. At the young age of just 15, he embraced the demanding path of penance and spiritual discipline. In Samvat 1610, he began performing rigorous austerities in devotion to Surya Dev. Every day, he would spend hours absorbed in meditation before the Sun God, remaining deeply immersed in his spiritual practice and continuing his arduous penance with unwavering dedication. After nearly five years of uninterrupted spiritual discipline, he is traditionally believed to have attained spiritual realization in Samvat 1615.

During this period of intense spiritual practice, Shri Kalyan Dev Ji experienced a profound inner calling, as though he had received a divine indication or spiritual command to undertake a pilgrimage to Mathura. He reflected upon this experience for some time, yet the inspiration to journey to Mathura continued to grow within his heart. Eventually, accepting it as a divine indication, he resolved to undertake the pilgrimage and set out from his home on a sacred journey to Mathura.

During his pilgrimage, he first performed the sacred circumambulation of Shri Giriraj Ji with deep reverence and then took a holy bath in Mansi Ganga. He then reached the sacred city of Mathura, where he bathed in the holy Yamuna, offered prayers, and received darshan of the Lord. Continuing his journey beyond Mathura, he eventually arrived at the ancient land of Vidrumvan, which is now known as Baldev Nagar.

Upon reaching the sacred land of Vidrumvan, he spent the night there. The serene surroundings, dense banyan trees, peaceful solitude, and the tranquil banks of the Yamuna deeply touched his heart. Moved by the spiritual atmosphere of this sacred land, Shri Kalyan Dev Ji decided to remain there for some time and devote himself to penance and meditation. This decision would eventually become a significant turning point in his life and an important chapter in the spiritual history of Baldev Dham.

Lord Shri Dauji Maharaj Appears in a Divine Vision

One day, after completing his daily rituals, Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj was deeply absorbed in his spiritual practice. At that very moment, Lord Shri Balarama appeared before him in a divine form, holding His sacred plough and mace. Overwhelmed with devotion upon receiving the Lord’s divine darshan, Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj was filled with profound spiritual joy. Pleased with his intense penance, Lord Shri Balarama offered him the opportunity to ask for a boon.

With folded hands, Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj bowed before the Lord and humbly expressed that he had no desire for worldly possessions, wealth, or material comforts. His only wish was to receive the eternal darshan of Shri Dauji Maharaj and to have the Lord forever reside in his home. Pleased with his selfless devotion, Lord Shri Baladeva blessed him with the words “Tathastu”—“So be it”—and then disappeared from sight. The Lord also assured him that all the spiritual merit and blessings he had hoped to gain from his pilgrimage to Mathura would be granted to him at this very sacred land.

Before disappearing, Shri Dauji Maharaj gave him another divine indication. The Lord revealed that the sacred deities of Shri Dauji Maharaj and Shri Revati Ji were buried beneath a banyan tree nearby and instructed him to bring them forth from the earth. As soon as he received this divine command, Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj was filled with extraordinary enthusiasm and devotion. He immediately went to the indicated place and began digging the sacred ground beneath the banyan tree, following the divine direction given by Lord Shri Balarama Himself.

The Divine Manifestation of Shri Dauji and Shri Revati Ji Beneath the Banyan Tree

At the same time, a remarkable and mysterious event was unfolding in Gokul. According to tradition, on the night before Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj received the divine darshan of Lord Shri Balarama, Goswami Gokulnath Ji had a divine dream. In the dream, he was given the assurance that the Shyama cow he had been concerned about was completely innocent. She would go every day to a particular place and offer her milk upon the sacred deity of the Lord who was residing beneath the earth. The dream further revealed that the divine deities of Shri Dauji Maharaj and Shri Revati Ji were buried beneath a banyan tree in Vidrumvan and should be brought forth from that sacred place.

This was the same Shyama cow that had recently given birth but had stopped yielding milk. Whenever the cowherd took the herd into the forest to graze, Shyama would suddenly make her way to a particular spot and stand there. As soon as she reached that place, milk would spontaneously flow from her udders onto the ground, leaving them completely empty. Because of this mysterious occurrence, the cowherd had begun to suspect that someone was secretly taking the cow’s milk.

Inspired by the divine indication and the dream he had received, Goswami Gokulnath Ji decided to visit the place. When he arrived, he discovered that Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj had already uncovered the two sacred deities of Shri Dauji Maharaj and Shri Revati Ji from beneath the earth. The two saints respectfully bowed to one another and shared their respective divine experiences. In this way, the years of spiritual austerity undertaken by Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj and the divine dream received by Goswami Gokulnath Ji came together at the same sacred place.

Thereafter, the possibility of taking the sacred deities out of the dense forest and bringing them to Gokul for consecration was considered. Many people were gathered for this purpose, and even 24 oxen were brought to help move the deities. Yet, despite repeated efforts, neither of the sacred deities moved even slightly from their place. The more they tried, the clearer it became that the Lord Himself wished to remain upon this sacred land.

Ultimately, everyone accepted this as the divine will and chose to honor the sacred indication. It was decided that Shri Dauji Maharaj and Mata Shri Revati Ji should be installed at the very place where they had manifested. Thus, the two divine deities were formally consecrated for the first time in the same Parnakuti where Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj had performed his penance and spiritual practices.

With this sacred consecration, the divine boon bestowed by Shri Dauji Maharaj upon Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj was also fulfilled—the Lord’s assurance that He would eternally reside in his home. In this way, the devotion and penance of Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj, together with the divine grace of Lord Shri Dauji Maharaj, transformed this sacred land into the spiritual heart of what would eventually become the great religious tradition of Baldev Dham.

The First Worship on Margashirsha Purnima and the Tradition of Kheer Offering

The auspicious day on which the sacred deities of Shri Dauji Maharaj and Mata Shri Revati Ji were first consecrated coincided with the full moon day of the month of Margashirsha. According to traditional belief, this sacred occasion took place in Vikram Samvat 1638. On this auspicious day, both divine deities were formally consecrated and worshipped according to Vedic traditions and the Shodashopachara method of worship. Following the ceremony, kheer was offered as the very first bhog to Shri Thakur Ji. It is traditionally believed that, from that day onward, kheer has held a special place among the offerings made to Shri Dauji Maharaj.

Following the consecration of the deities, Goswami Gokulnath Ji resolved to construct a magnificent temple at this sacred site, while Shri Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj took responsibility for the regular worship and service of Shri Dauji Maharaj. According to tradition, from that time onward, the descendants of Shri Kalyan Dev Ji have continued, generation after generation, the sacred tradition of worship, service, and devotion to Shri Dauji Maharaj.

Following the first consecration in the Parnakuti on Margashirsha Purnima of Samvat 1638, construction of the temple began. Within approximately a year, on the auspicious occasion of Margashirsha Purnima in Samvat 1639, the sacred deities of Shri Dauji Maharaj and Mata Shri Revati Ji were formally moved from the Parnakuti and consecrated in the newly constructed temple. The new temple was equipped with facilities to serve the needs of devotees. With this, the regular worship, service, and religious traditions of Shri Dauji Maharaj took on a more organized form, eventually becoming a defining part of the spiritual identity of Baldev Dham.

Vidrumvan – The Birthplace of Lord Shri Balarama Ji

The divine manifestation of Lord Shri Balarama Ji, the elder brother of Lord Shri Krishna, is associated with many profound and mysterious events. According to religious tradition, when the seventh child was conceived in the womb of Devaki Ji, Yogamaya transferred the divine embryo from Devaki Ji’s womb to that of Mata Rohini, the senior wife of Vasudeva Ji. This divine act of transferring the child is the reason Lord Balarama Ji is famously known by the name ‘Sankarshana’.

At that time, due to the tyranny and fear of Kansa, Mata Rohini was residing in Gokul under the protection of Nanda Baba and Mata Yashoda. As the time of Lord Balarama Ji’s divine appearance approached, Mata Rohini was taken to the sacred land of Vidrumvan, situated near Gokul. According to religious tradition, Vidrumvan was blessed with natural beauty, lush greenery, tranquility, and a deeply spiritual atmosphere. Nanda Baba’s cows also grazed in this sacred region, connecting the land with the pastoral traditions and rural culture of Braj.

The traditions of Braj also mention a place called Avairani near Vidrumvan. According to local belief, ‘Avairani’ was regarded as a place free from hostility, hatred, and fear. Its peaceful surroundings, away from the oppression of Kansa, were considered a safe refuge for Mata Rohini. It is in this sacred land of Braj that the divine manifestation of Lord Balarama Ji is traditionally believed to have taken place.

The following verse is traditionally associated with the divine manifestation of Lord Balarama Ji:

शुभे भाद्रपदे मासे, ह्यागते पुण्ययोगतः।
षष्ठ्याम् तिथौ शुक्लपक्षे मध्याह्ने वृष्चि लग्नके।
रोहिण्याम् च स्वयं जातो आदिशेषो महाबलः॥

According to traditional religious beliefs and accounts associated with the Garga Samhita, Lord Balarama Ji manifested from the womb of Mata Rohini on the auspicious Shukla Paksha Shashthi of the month of Bhadrapada. He is revered as an incarnation of Ananta Shesha, the eternal serpent form of Lord Vishnu. Because of His extraordinary strength, valor, and divine nature, He is also known by many sacred names, including Balabhadra, Baladeva, Haladhara, Halayudha, and Sankarshana.

According to religious tradition, Lord Shri Balarama Ji was elder to Lord Shri Krishna, and the two brothers are traditionally believed to have been born approximately eleven months and a few days apart. Lord Balarama Ji is believed to have manifested on the Shukla Paksha Shashthi of Bhadrapada, while Lord Shri Krishna was born approximately eleven months later, on the Ashtami of the Krishna Paksha in the same lunar month. For this reason, within the devotional traditions of Braj, Lord Balarama Ji is revered as the elder brother of Shri Krishna and lovingly remembered as His foremost companion and protector.
