Devraj Indra, the leader of fifty crore Gandharvas, arranged a grand dance and music festival in that forest with great joy. The name of Chitrasena's wife was Malini, from whom a beautiful daughter named Pushpavanti was born. Pushpadanta Gandharva had a highly radiant son whom people called Malyavan. Malyavan was intensely attracted to the extraordinary beauty of Pushpavanti.

Both Malyavan and Pushpavanti had arrived at the assembly to perform for the satisfaction of Lord Indra. While they were performing along with other Apsaras, they became deeply overwhelmed by mutual infatuation and lust. Due to this intense attachment, their minds became completely bewildered. Consequently, they failed to sing the celestial notes purely. Sometimes the rhythm (Tala) would break, and sometimes the song would stop abruptly. Devraj Indra immediately observed this careless error (Pramada) and considered it a direct insult to his royal court. Becoming highly enraged, Indra cursed them saying—'O fools! Disgrace upon both of you! You are fallen and have violated my royal command; therefore, while living as husband and wife, go down to earth and become terrifying Pishachas (ghouls).'

Upon receiving this terrifying curse from Indra, both of them were filled with immense sorrow. They immediately fell from heaven and arrived at the cold ranges of the Himalaya mountains. Having obtained the painful Pishacha form, they began suffering intense physical and mental agony. Tormented by the acute heat generated by their sinful physical forms, they wandered aimlessly in the dark caves of the mountain. One day, the miserable pishacha said to his wife—'What terrible sins did we commit in our past that we have received this agonizing pishacha form? The suffering of hell is extraordinarily frightening, and this ghoul life is also causing immense pain. Therefore, one must completely avoid sinful deeds through full effort.'

Drowned in deep anxiety and sorrow, their bodies began drying up day by day. By divine providence (Daivayoga), the highly auspicious Ekadashi date of the bright fortnight of Magha month arrived. The day of Jaya Ekadashi, celebrated as the best among all lunar dates, manifested. On that holy day, both of them abandoned all types of food.
