Margashirsha Maas Krishna Paksha Utpanna Ekadashi Vrat Katha
॥ Introduction ॥

The Ekadashi that falls during the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of the holy Margashirsha month (Hemant Ritu) is celebrated as 'Utpanna Ekadashi'. This sacred tithi marks the actual origin of Goddess Ekadashi, who manifested directly from the divine energy of Lord Vishnu to destroy the terrifying demon Mur. Observing this fast with absolute devotion dissolves the heaviest sins, prevents rebirth, and clears the path to the supreme abode of Vaikuntha.

॥ Importance ॥

The spiritual potency of Utpanna Ekadashi is incomparable. Lord Shri Krishna states that the merit obtained from this fast is greater than taking a holy bath in the Shankhodhar or Prabhas pilgrimage, and a hundred times superior to performing an Ashwamedha Yajna or donating thousands of cows to a Vedic scholar. It acts as the ultimate tool for washing away accumulated past sins and liberating souls from the cycle of the womb (Garbhavasa).

॥ Puranic Reference ॥

This eternal dialogue occurred in the Dwapar Yuga between Lord Shri Krishna and King Yudhishthira. In this text, the Supreme Lord explains the universal methodology of Nakta Vrat (consuming food at the eighth part of the day when the sun dims) and Ekabhukta Vrat (eating only once a day), followed by the historical battle between the deities and the mighty demon Mur of Chandravati city, which led to the creation of the sacred Ekadashi tithi.

॥ Story ॥

Yudhishthira asked—O Lord! How did the highly meritorious Ekadashi tithi manifest? Why is it considered so pure in this world, and how did it become so dear to the demigods?

The Supreme Lord spoke—O Kuntinandan! In ancient times, during the Satya Yuga, there lived a demon named Mur. He was extraordinarily fierce, terrible, and a constant terror to all the deities. That evil-minded demon even conquered Indra. Defeated and terrified, all the demigods were ousted from heaven and wandered on the earth. One day, they approached Lord Shiva, and Indra narrated their entire plight.

Indra said—O Maheshwar! The demigods have fallen from the heavenly realm and are wandering on earth. Living among mortals does not suit them. O Lord! Please show us a remedy. Where should the deities seek shelter?

Lord Mahadev said—O King of Devas! Go to the master of the universe, Lord Garudadhwaja, who gives shelter to everyone and is always ready to protect all. He will surely protect you.

Lord Shri Krishna continued—Yudhishthira! Hearing Shiva's words, Indra along with all the demigods went to the cosmic ocean (Kshira Sagara) where Lord Gadadhar was resting. Beholding Him, Indra joined his hands and began praying: 'O Lord of lords! Salutations to You. Both gods and demons worship You. O Pundarikaksha! You are the destroyer of demons. O Madhusudan, Jagannath! Please save us. All the deities have come to Your shelter out of severe fear of the demon Mur. O Bhaktavatsal, Janardan! Protect us, protect us!'

Hearing Indra's words, Lord Vishnu asked—'O Devraj! Who is that demon? What is his form and strength, and where does that wicked creature reside?'

Indra replied—O Deveshwar! In ancient times, a terrifying demon named Talajangha was born in the lineage of Brahmaji. His son became famous as Mur. He is extraordinarily powerful and terrifying to the gods. He resides in a glorious city named Chandravati. He has thrown out all the deities from heaven and placed another demon as Indra on the throne. He has also created duplicate gods for Agni, Chandrama, Surya, Vayu, and Varuna. He has deprived the demigods of every single rightful place.'

Hearing this, Lord Janardan became extremely angry. Taking the demigods along, He marched toward Chandravati city. Seeing Lord Vishnu, the demon Mur roared fiercely and rushed forward, shouting, 'Stay right there!' Lord Vishnu's eyes turned red with righteous anger. He began striking down the enemy forces with His divine arrows and unleashed His cosmic discus (Sudarshana Chakra), sending hundreds of warriors to death. Afterward, the Lord moved toward Badarikashram and entered a cave named Singhavati, which was twelve yojanas long and had only one entrance. Lord Vishnu went to sleep inside the cave. The demon Mur, determined to kill Him, followed Him into the cave. Seeing the Lord asleep, he rejoiced, thinking he would easily slay the destroyer of demons.

Yudhishthira! The moment the demon thought so, a beautiful, exceptionally powerful, and radiant maiden equipped with divine weapons manifested directly from Lord Vishnu's body. She was born from a part of the Lord's own spiritual energy. The demon Mur challenged the maiden, and a fierce battle ensued. She was highly skilled in all forms of warfare, and with a single powerful roar (Humkara), she instantly reduced the great demon Mur into a heap of ashes.

When the Lord woke up, He saw His terrifying enemy lying dead on the ground and asked—'Who has slain this fierce adversary?' The maiden replied—'O Master! By Your divine grace, I have destroyed this great demon.' Lord Shri Krishna said—'O auspicious one! Your divine act has brought immense joy to all the sages and demigods across the three worlds. Therefore, ask for any boon you desire, and I shall grant it without a doubt.'

The maiden, who was personified Ekadashi, requested—'O Lord! If You are pleased with me, let me become the foremost among all holy pilgrimages, the destroyer of all obstacles, and the bestower of all spiritual perfections (Siddhis). May those who fast on my day with absolute devotion obtain all successes, and may You grant wealth, righteousness, and absolute salvation (Moksha) to those who follow my vow through complete fasts, Nakta, or Ekabhukta.'

Lord Vishnu declared—'O auspicious one! Everything you have asked shall be completely fulfilled. Since you manifested on the eleventh day (Ekadashi tithi), you will be worshiped throughout the entire universe as Utpanna Ekadashi, and all My beloved devotees will eternally be your absolute devotees as well.'

॥ Moral of the Story ॥
  • Absolute sense control and discipline; True fasting is not merely staying waterless but gaining dynamic control over sleep, speech, anger, and worldly attachments across multiple days.
  • Divine protection for the surrendered; When the demigods completely surrendered to Lord Vishnu, the Lord manifested His internal energy to destroy their deepest fears and re-establish righteousness.
  • The equality of both fortnights; The supreme text establishes that there is no difference in the spiritual status of Shukla and Krishna Paksha Ekadashis; a true devotee must treat both with equal reverence.
  • The supremacy of internal awakening; Goddess Ekadashi born from the Lord's own radiance signifies that internal spiritual purity and awakening are the absolute tools to burn demonic tendencies (sins) into ashes.
॥ Vrat & Worship Method ॥
  • On Margashirsha Krishna Dashami, observe either an Ekabhukta meal or a precise Nakta fast, consuming food only once when the sun's intensity dims.

  • Before bathing, apply sacred clay (mrittika) to the body while chanting the designated Vedic request to mother earth.

  • Spend the complete day reading or discussing sacred scriptures and listening to the divine origin story of Utpanna Ekadashi.
  • Keep a night vigil (Jagaran) filled with devotional singing, and systematically seek forgiveness from noble scholars on Dwadashi morning.
॥ Parana (Breaking the Fast) Method ॥
  • The fast must be broken on the Dwadashi Tithi strictly after sunrise and within the scriptural time window.
  • Ensure that the mandatory initial period of Dwadashi known as Hari Vasara has completely passed before taking the breaking meal.
