King Yudhishthira asked—O Lord of lords! I ask You—what is the name of the Ekadashi that falls during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Margashirsha month? What is its specific method, and which deity is worshiped on this day? O Master! Please tell me all of this precisely as it is.

Lord Shri Krishna replied—O best among kings! During the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of the Margashirsha month, the Ekadashi named 'Utpanna' occurs, which I have already described before you. Now, I shall describe the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight, by merely hearing which a person obtains the fruit of a Vajapeya Yajna. Its name is 'Mokshada' Ekadashi, which completely destroys all sins. O King! On that day, one must diligently worship Lord Damodar with Tulsi manjaris (blossoms), incense, lamps, and other offerings. One must observe the rules of Dashami and Ekadashi precisely according to the previously stated methodology. This 'Mokshada' Ekadashi is the destroyer of major sins. On that night, one must keep a vigil (Jagaran) with active dancing, singing devotional songs, and chanting prayers for My supreme pleasure. If anyone's ancestors have fallen into lower realms of womb or hell due to past sins, offering the spiritual merit of this fast to them grants them immediate salvation. There is absolutely no doubt about this.

It is a matter of ancient times. In the exceptionally beautiful city of Champak, which was magnificently adorned with devoted Vaishnavas, lived a pious king named Vaikhanas. He ruled over and protected his subjects just like a loving father protects his own children. While ruling in this righteous manner, one night the king saw a terrifying dream wherein his deceased ancestors and parents were trapped and suffering miserably in hellish lower realms. Seeing them all in such an agonized condition, the king was struck with profound sorrow and heavy astonishment. In the morning, he gathered the learned Brahmins and narrated the entire accounts of his dream.

The King said—O respected Brahmins! I have seen my forefathers falling into hell. They were weeping repeatedly and calling out to me, saying, 'You are our son, therefore, deliver us from this ocean of hell!' O best among twice-borns! I have beheld my ancestors in this agonizing state. Because of this, I find no peace or comfort anywhere. What should I do? Where should I go? My heart feels completely choked up. O ultimate Brahmins! Please be compassionate and tell me that specific fast, that penance, or that spiritual yoga by which my ancestors can obtain immediate release from hell. While a strong, resourceful, and courageous son like me is alive, my parents are rotting in terrible hell! Therefore, what is the use of such a son?

The Brahmins replied—O King! Very close to here is the grand hermitage of Sage Parvat Muni. He is a master of the past, present, and future. O best among men! You should go to him immediately.

Hearing the advice of the Brahmins, King Vaikhanas rushed to the ashram of Sage Parvat. Beholding the great seer, the king offered his prostrated obeisances (Dandavat-pranam) and humbly touched the holy feet of the sage. The sage also inquired from the king about the well-being of the seven vital organs of his kingdom. The King replied—O Master! By your divine grace, all seven organs of my kingdom are completely safe and prosperous. However, I have seen a horrifying vision in my dream that my ancestors are trapped in hell. Therefore, please tell me by the influence of which spiritual virtue will they obtain freedom from there?

Hearing these words of the king, the great Sage Parvat entered deep meditation for a muhurta (a brief period). Afterward, emerging from his trance, he spoke to the king—'O Maharaja! In the bright fortnight of the Margashirsha month, there falls the highly auspicious 'Mokshada' Ekadashi. All of you must systematically fast on that day and transfer the entire accumulated spiritual merit of that fast to your ancestors. By the absolute power of that virtue, their deliverance from hell will be accomplished instantly.'

Lord Shri Krishna continued—Yudhishthira! Hearing the words of the sage, the king returned to his palace. When the supreme month of Margashirsha arrived, King Vaikhanas strictly executed the fast of Mokshada Ekadashi according to the instructions of the seer, and dedicated its entire spiritual merit to his father along with all ancestors. The very moment the virtue was offered, a divine rain of celestial flowers began falling from the heavens. Vaikhanas's father, along with the other forefathers, was instantly delivered from the hellish realm. Ascending toward the heavenly skies, they spoke these sacred words to the king—'Son! May you be blessed with absolute welfare.' Saying this, they departed for the heavenly planets.

O King! Whosoever performs the fast of this highly auspicious and transformative Mokshada Ekadashi gets all their sins eradicated, and after leaving the material body, they attain supreme salvation. This Mokshada Ekadashi, which grants absolute liberation, is like a wish-fulfilling Chintamani stone for human beings, completely fulfilling all desires. Reading or listening to this sacred majesty bestows the fruit of a grand Vajapeya Yajna.
