In the Santoshi Mata fast, one should strictly avoid consuming sour food items (khatai). Especially on the day of the Udyapan of the fast, no kind of sour item should be eaten at home, nor should it be given to anyone else to eat. During the Udyapan, the boys who are fed should also not be given any sour food or anything prepared with sour ingredients. During the fast and Udyapan, these rules should be followed according to faith and proper rituals.
