About Shri Balabhadra Stotram

Shri Balabhadra Stotram (here called Valabhadra Stavaraja) is an 11-verse Sanskrit hymn to Balarama. It is set as a dialogue: Duryodhana asks Sage Pragvipaka for a stotra of Baladeva that gives all siddhis, and the sage gives this stavaraja, which the text itself says was composed by Veda Vyasa. The same frame is used for the Shri Balabhadra Kavacham, which is from the Balabhadra Khanda of the Garga Samhita. Please confirm the exact source from your own edition.

Verse 1: the request. "Stotram Shri Baladevasya, Pragvipaka mahamune, vada mam kripaya sakshat, sarvasiddhipradayakam": O great sage, please tell me the stotra of Baladeva that gives all siddhis.

Verse 2: the reply. The sage says: hear this auspicious king of hymns (stavaraja) of Rama (Balarama), composed by Veda Vyasa, which gives all siddhis and, in the text''s words, liberation (kaivalya).

Verse 3: Kamapala, Ananta, Shesha. Salutations to the God of gods, Kamapala (protector of wishes), and to Ananta and Shesha, the very form of Rama (Balarama).

Verse 4: Sankarshana. Salutations to the holder of the earth (Dharadhara), the full one, who lives in his own abode, with the plough in hand (Sheerapani) and a thousand heads (Sahasrashirsha), Sankarshana.

Verse 5: Revati-raman. You are the husband of Revati, Baladeva, the elder brother of Achyuta (Krishna), Halayudha (the one whose weapon is the plough), killer of Pralamba and Purushottama: protect me.

Verse 6: names and signs. Salutations to Bala, Balabhadra, the one with the palm-tree sign on his banner (Taalanka), the one in blue (Neelambara), the fair one (Gaura) and the son of Rohini (Rauhineya).

Verse 7: the demons. You are the enemy and destroyer of Dhenuka (the donkey demon of Talavana), Mushtika (the wrestler of Kamsa), Kuta (a wrestler or demon in the Kamsa story), Valvala (the demon who disturbed sages'' sacrifices), Rukmi (Rukmini''s brother, killed at a wedding dice game quarrel), Koopakarna and Kumbhanda (the Bana episode).

Verse 8: deeds with the plough. Kalindi bhedana: when the Yamuna would not come, he drew her with the plough. Hastinapur karshana: in the Samba episode he pulled Hastinapur toward the Ganga until the Kauravas begged pardon. He killed Dvivida the ape, is the lord of the Yadavas and an ornament of Braj.

Verse 9: other deeds. You killed the brothers of Kamsa, went on a tirtha yatra (during the Kurukshetra war he chose not to fight and travelled to holy places) and were the direct teacher of Duryodhana in the mace. Protect, protect the world, O Lord.

Verse 10: victory. "Jaya jayachyuta deva paratparah": victory to the highest, whose fame reaches every direction, worshipped by gods, sages and the lord of serpents, holder of the pestle (Mushali), the plough (Halin) and strength (Valin).

Verse 11: the fruit. One who reads this stavana always reaches the highest abode of Hari and gains strength in the world, victory over enemies, family and wealth. This is a statement of faith, not a guarantee.

The message. Balarama is shown as strong, protective and impartial: he fights evil but would not take sides in the Kurukshetra war. Read the Baladevashtakam, Balaram Chalisa and Balarama Ji page.
