About Shri Ganga Maiya Ji Ki Aarti (Jai Ganga Maiya)

The Aarti "Jai Ganga Maiya, Maa Jai Surasari Maiya" is a deeply revered devotional hymn dedicated to Mother Ganga, who is worshiped across India as the supreme purifier and river of divine liberation (Patit Pavani). The opening verses hail Mother Ganga as the most sturdy and unbreakable boat (Sudridh Naiya) that safely carries living beings across the turbulent and dreadful ocean of worldly existence (Bhavsagar). She is praised as "Surasari" (the river of the devas) whose pure, pristine stream originated directly from the lotus feet of Lord Vishnu (Hari Pad Padm Prasuta), was held in Lord Brahma's Kamandalu, and descended to earth through the arduous penance of King Bhagiratha.

The hymn highlights how Mother Ganga descended to the earthly realm by residing in the matted locks of Lord Shiva (Shankar-Jata Bihaarini) to cushion Her immense force. She dissolved the curse and liberated the sixty thousand sons of King Sagar (Sagar-Putr-Gan-Taarini), eradicating all three forms of human suffering (Adhyatmika, Adhibhautika, Adhidaivika). The aarti proclaims the immense glory of Her name—stating that even if a person situated in a distant land simply chants "Ganga Ganga" with devotion, they receive Her instant purifying grace.

Furthermore, the hymn describes Mother Ganga's ultimate power of redemption: even a tiny fraction of a deceased person's ashes coming into contact with Her holy waters grants the departed soul purification and entry into the supreme abode (Param Dham). Not just humans, but trees, aquatic animals, land creatures, birds, and insects inhabiting Her banks attain spiritual liberation (Nirvana). The prayer concludes with a humble plea to the compassionate Mother to shower mercy on the needy, dispel worldly illusions (Maya), and unite the devotee's soul with the lotus feet of the Divine Lord.
