About Shri Yamuna Chalisa
The opening dohas speak of her playing with her Beloved, the essence of the Vedas, whose darshan and touch remove sin and who is the life-support of Krishna. They call Yamuna pure and spotless, a mine of every rasa of devotion, whose greatness Shesha and Mahesh cannot finish describing. She is worshipped by gods and demons, dear to Mukund, and appeared in the world to give liberation, so that those who serve her cross over. The devotee ends the dohas by folding his hands and asking her to grant devotion and carry him across the world.
The first verses call her Yamuna Maharani, Kalindi and Krishna Patarani, with a matchless form and the beauty of Braj. The Chalisa says she did fierce tapasya and Murari fulfilled her wish, accepting her as his own ardhangi, and that she took shelter with the Lord of Braj and lived in Gokul. When Krishna came to Nand''s house in Gokul, she bowed at his feet and had darshan (see the Krishna Chalisa). It describes her dark body, water drops shining like pearls, sixteen adornments, a nose-ring in Krishna''s style and ankle-bells, and says that when Muralidhar plays his flute she plays with him, while peacocks, swans and koels play and water-birds call softly.
The middle verses explain the power of her name and water. They say that when "Yamuna" comes to the lips, inauspiciousness turns away, that one who takes her name finds Sanwaro (Krishna) always near, and that she is merciful, a mine of rasa, and worshipped by gods, humans and sages. Those who do dand-pranam and achaman at her bank are said to wash away sin and cross the ocean of worldly life, saints bathe in her and fill their hearts with nine-fold devotion, and devotees who do deepdaan and aarti keep a pure mind. She is also called the daughter of the Sun, which links her with the Sun and with Yama in tradition (see the Surya Chalisa).
The Pushtimarg lines say that Pushtimargis daily sing her glory and make their devotion to Krishna firm, and that when Shri Yamuna is gracious, a jeev gets a Brahm-sambandh. The closing verses salute her with "Namo Namo" as the giver of happiness and remover of sorrow, ask her to cut the net of worldly life and take the devotee into her shelter, and promise that one who sings the Chalisa daily gains knowledge, devotion, wealth and fame, and goes to the divine abode at the end. The last doha says that reciting it by rule firms one''s love for Krishna''s feet. These are matters of faith. Yamuna is also remembered in the same breath as Ganga (see the Ganga Chalisa) and Radha (see the Radha Chalisa), and keeping her water clean is the most practical form of devotion.
тЭУ Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Who is Maa Yamuna, and what names does the Chalisa give her?
Answer: The Chalisa calls her Yamuna Maharani, Kalindi, Krishna Patarani (Krishna''s chief consort) and Suryasuta, the daughter of the Sun. She is also called Madhav-Priya, Kunjeshwari and Shriharipriya, and the verses say Shesha and Mahesh bow to her (see the Surya Chalisa).
Question: What does the Chalisa say about Yamuna''s tapasya and her bond with Krishna?
Answer: It says she did fierce tapasya and Murari fulfilled her wish, accepting her as his own ardhangi (better half). It adds that Krishna came to Nand''s house in Gokul, and she bowed at his feet and had darshan. The verses also say that without her Beloved she finds no rest (see the Krishna Chalisa).
Question: How does the Chalisa describe her form?
Answer: It describes a dark (shyamal) body, water drops shining like pearls, sixteen adornments, bracelets, a nose-ring in Krishna''s style, and ankle-bells that ring as she walks. It says even a crore Kamadevas are put to shame by her charm.
Question: What practices does the Chalisa recommend for Yamuna worship?
Answer: It speaks of dand-pranam and achaman at the river, bathing with devotion, dwelling in Braj, saints bathing (majjan), doing deepdaan and aarti, and singing her praise with humility. It says that those who do so find a pure mind and inner joy.
Question: What is the Pushtimarg reference in the Chalisa?
Answer: One verse says Pushtimargis sing her glory daily and strengthen their devotion at Krishna''s feet. Another says that when Shri Yamuna is gracious, a jeev receives a Brahm-sambandh. These are terms of the Pushtimarg tradition, and their fuller meaning is best learned from that tradition.
Question: When should the Yamuna Chalisa be recited?
Answer: At sunrise or at evening aarti, at a Yamuna ghat or at home with a lamp. Yamuna Chhath (Chaitra Shukla Shashthi) and Yama Dwitiya (Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, Bhai Dooj) are special days. Please keep the river clean when you visit.
