About Shri Brihaspati Dev Chalisa

Shri Brihaspati Dev Chalisa is a highly auspicious and powerful devotional hymn dedicated to Devguru Brihaspati (Guru Graha), who is considered the most benevolent among the Navagrahas and the presiding deity of knowledge, wisdom, and dharma. He is also known as Angira Nandan, being the son of Sage Angira, and Vachaspati, the eloquent preceptor of speech and learning.

The Chalisa describes his divine form in detail: seated upon a lotus, holding a golden staff and a rosary in his four arms, adorned with a golden crown and yellow robes (pitambara dhari), and traveling through the sky in a golden chariot drawn by pale-colored horses. According to the hymn, he attained his position as Guru of the gods through intense penance performed at Prabhas, which pleased Lord Shankar (Shiva), who granted him the boon of becoming Vachaspati.

A central episode in the Chalisa recounts how Lord Indra once insulted Guru Brihaspati without cause. As a consequence, the Devtas lost their prosperity, and the demons raised their victory banner over heaven. In Brihaspati''s absence, Indra appointed Vishwarupa as his priest, which led to further turmoil. It was only after Indra humbly sought forgiveness and praised Brihaspati that the Devtas regained their glory and standing in the three worlds.

The Chalisa also establishes Brihaspati''s astrological significance as the ruler (nayak) of the zodiac signs Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meena (Pisces), and the giver of justice, wisdom, and righteous conduct to the world. It recommends specific worship items including yellow cloth, turmeric, yellow grains, sugar, honey, and topaz (pukhraj), along with donations of books, gold, or a horse for attaining auspicious blessings.

It is believed that reciting this Chalisa with devotion on Thursdays removes ignorance, brings success in studies and competitive exams, and attracts happiness, prosperity, and auspicious events in the household.
