About Shri Gauri Chalisa
The opening dohas invite the Mother into the temple of the mind. The devotee begins her praise at the feet of Gauri Maa Mateshwari and says plainly that he does not know the rules of worship, but his faith is boundless, and he asks her to accept his pranam as the support of his life. The first verses address her as Gauri, Uma and Shankari, the giver of fortune, the Mother who welcomes the one who takes refuge, and the mother of Kartikeya and Ganesh (see the Ganesh Chalisa). They ask her to come with Mahadev and Ganpati and to remove all troubles (see the Shiv Chalisa).
The central theme is marriage and family happiness. The verses ask the Mother to awaken the lines of fortune, to bring a pleasing union, and to give a life partner the heart desires, together with the affection of the in-laws. They say that she protects the suhag, the married state, of the woman who remembers her with a sincere heart, that one who chants "Om Namah Shivay" receives the love of the Shiv family, and that Shiva himself does not refuse her word. The last verses say that the one who reads or hears the Chalisa receives a suitable groom as a boon.
The other verses are a wider prayer. The devotee asks that suffering end, that the family stay healthy, that evil spirits do not trouble those she protects, and that even small means be blessed with abundance. He offers fruit, flowers and milk with devotion and asks her to cover his faults with the shelter of her motherly love. He says that gods and sages bow to her, that she gives a way to liberation to the one with a pure heart, that her grace has no limit, and that the world worships her for it.
