Shri Jagannath Chalisa
Blessings, Devotion, Mental Peace, Removal of Suffering, Liberation
Shri Jagannath jagat guru,
aas bhagat ke aap.
Naam lete hi aapka,
mite kasht santaap.
Main adham hoon moodh mati,
pooja vidhi ka na gyaan.
Dosh mera na dharna naath,
main hoon teri santaan.
॥ Chaupai ॥
Jai Jagannath jagat ke paalak,
Bhav bhay bhanjan kasht nivaarak.
Sangi saathi na jiska koi,
aasra uska bas ek tu hi.
Bhagton ke dukh door kare tu,
santon ke sada man mein base tu.
Patit paavan naam tihara,
saare jag mein tu ik pyara.
Shankh kshetra mein dham hai tera,
peed hara hai naam tihara.
Sagar tat mein Nilgiri par,
tune basa liya apna ghar.
Jo tere roop ko man mein basaye,
chinta jag ki na use sataye.
Teri sharan mein jo bhi aaye,
vipda se tu use bachaye.
Dham tera har dham se nyara,
jiske bina hai teerth adhura.
Na ho jab tak tere darshan,
nishphal jeevan aur teerthatan.
Haath pair nahi hai prabhu tera,
phir bhi sabhi ko tera hi aasra.
Naath jagat ka tu kehlata,
har koi teri mahima gaata.
Bhagton ko tu sada lubhata,
mahima apni unse gavata.
Daasi ya bhagat tha ek anokha,
roop tera saag bhaat mein dekha.
Apne bagiche se shrifal toda,
de brahman ko haath wo joda.
Ja rahe prabhu ka karne darshan,
shrifal ye kar dena arpan.
Anhoni aisi hui bhai,
prabhu ne baanhen apni badhai.
Haath se vipra ke le nariyal,
daasiya ko diya bhakti ka phal.
Bandhu Mahanti ki bhakti kahen kya,
prabhu ko mitr sa pyara wo tha.
Darsh ka aas tere le man mein,
aaya tere puneet nagar mein.
Sang mein laaya kutumb tha apna,
pahuncha tujh tak jab hui raina.
Singh Dwar mandir ka band tha,
bhookhe pet bandhu soya tha.
Bhagat ka kasht na sah paaye Bhagwan,
swarna thaal mein laaye bhojan.
Salvega put Mughal pita ka,
naam tera har pal leta tha.
Rath yatra mein aa paaye na Puri,
sau-sau kos ki thi jo doori.
Guhar lagai Jagannath ko,
aaun na jab tak rokna rath ko.
Saara jag tab chakit hua tha,
bhakt ki ichchha jab poorn hui thi.
Doobe jag dev bhakti mein tere,
Geet Govind racha naam mein tere.
Likhte likhte kavi thahar gaye,
rachna poorn kaun kar paaye.
Patni se kaha snaan kar aaun,
aakar phir se buddhi lagaaun.
Roop kavi ka dhara Prabhu ne,
geet adhoora kiya poorn Prabhu ne.
Prem se bhakt ke prabhu bandhe hain,
bhakti preeti ke dor se jude hain.
Bina mol ke pyar se bikta,
Karma Bai ki khichdi khata.
Jaat paat ka bhed na koi,
jo tujhe dekha sudh bisraai.
Shankar Dev nirakar upaasak,
dekh tujhe bane tere sthapak.
Shri Gurunanak Sant Kabira,
har koi tujhko ek sa pyara.
Tum sa prabhu koi aur kahan hai,
bhakt jahan hai tu bhi wahan hai.
Bhakton ke man ko harshane,
rath par aata darshan dene.
Paakar pyare prabhu ka darshan,
kar lo dhanya sabhi yeh jeevan.
Jai Jagannath prem se bolo,
amrit naam ka kahe kundan pilo.
॥ Doha ॥
Krishna Balram dono,
aur beech Subhadra behan.
Nilanchal vaasi Jagannath,
sada baso more man.

About Shri Jagannath Chalisa
Shri Jagannath Chalisa is a sacred and powerful devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Jagannath, the Supreme Lord of the universe and a divine form of Lord Krishna. Lord Jagannath is worshipped in the holy city of Puri Dham (Shankha Kshetra) in Odisha, India, where He resides with His elder brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Goddess Subhadra. The unique feature of this holy shrine is that the deities are worshipped in sacred wooden (daru) forms, which makes the temple tradition spiritually distinctive and deeply revered.
The Shri Jagannath Chalisa beautifully describes the infinite compassion, love, and devotion of Lord Jagannath, who is known as Bhaktavatsal—the one who lovingly responds to the devotion of His devotees. The Lord is beyond all distinctions of caste, creed, and social status, and He accepts only pure love and sincere devotion from the heart of His devotees.
This Chalisa highlights several divine pastimes (leelas) that reflect the Lord’s boundless grace and accessibility. These include the story of Karma Bai’s simple offering of khichdi, which the Lord lovingly accepted, the divine moment when He stretched His arms to receive a coconut from devotee Dasia Bauri, the miraculous act of sending a golden plate of food for Bhakta Bhandu Mahanti, and the legendary episode where Lord Jagannath Himself completed the incomplete verses of the great poet Jayadeva’s Gita Govinda by appearing in divine form.
These sacred stories emphasize that Lord Jagannath is not bound by rituals or social barriers but is deeply moved by pure devotion and love.
According to Hindu belief, sincere recitation of the Shri Jagannath Chalisa removes ego, ignorance, and negative tendencies from the heart of the devotee. It purifies the mind and fills the soul with devotion (bhakti rasa), humility, and spiritual awareness. Regular chanting strengthens faith and brings inner peace, emotional balance, and a deeper connection with the divine.
Devotees believe that reciting the Shri Jagannath Chalisa regularly brings harmony in life, removes obstacles, and leads the seeker toward spiritual upliftment and liberation. It helps cultivate humility, surrender, and devotion to Lord Jagannath, who is considered the ultimate protector and benefactor of His devotees.
The recitation of this Chalisa is considered especially auspicious during Rath Yatra, Ekadashi, Gundicha Yatra, and other sacred festivals dedicated to Lord Jagannath. It is believed that chanting this divine hymn with sincerity attracts the boundless blessings of Lord Jagannath, filling life with joy, devotion, prosperity, and spiritual enlightenment.
