About Shri Shakambhari Chalisa
The first verses praise her. They call her a bringer of happiness, the full Brahm who removes sorrow, the cause of the world and the giver, with an eternal flame (amar jot) that is always kind to devotees. They say her glory is beyond measure, that Brahma, Hari and Har offer themselves to her, that she is a mine of knowledge and kind to the poor, and that she is Narayani, who fills water, land and sky. When devotees meditated on her, her flame appeared.
A special feature is her family of forms. The Chalisa says she stays with her dear sister Shatakshi, that the third sister Bheema has a fearsome form, that the fourth sister Bhramari is wonderful and restless-minded, and that Kalratri takes a terrible form (see the Mahakali Chalisa for Kali''s forms). Bhairav Veer stands before her and has fought many battles with demons, and Shiv Shankar, Bhola Bhandari, is always kind to saints (see the Bhairav Chalisa and Shiv Chalisa). Hanuman carries a flag and goes with her to the battlefield (see the Hanuman Chalisa), Laukada, also called Bhura Dev, is her follower whose worship comes first, and Ganpati gives the eight siddhis and is the first to be worshipped (see the Ganesh Chalisa).
The verses recall her deeds. She became Rakt Dantika and killed demons, destroyed Raktabeej and took the Chhinnamastika form (see the Durga Chalisa). She sits as a Siddh Yogini in seven kunds, took the form of a swan (maral) to give food to the people, and saved sages with shok paat, a leafy vegetable. These lines are the Chalisa''s way of showing her as the one who feeds. A well-known Puranic account, not told in this Chalisa, says the demon Durgamasura caused a hundred-year famine and the Goddess fed all beings with greens and herbs, giving her the name Shakambhari. Texts differ on the details.
The later verses list the bhog and what she gives. She accepts halwa and puri, a flag, a coconut, tilak with sindoor and a red chunri. It says she gives sight to the blind, heals the leprosy-afflicted, fills the childless home with children and the poor with wealth, and takes devotees across. The poet names himself Kanta Prasad of Jagadhari and asks her to free him from worldly life. One who recites it a hundred times becomes dear to the Mother, and one who keeps a lamp for nine nights with the family finds joy. These are matters of faith, so they are best read as hope alongside honest effort, and the practice of sharing food is a natural part of her worship.
тЭУ Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Who is Maa Shakambhari?
Answer: The Chalisa calls her a giver of great happiness, the cause of the world and a mother whose amar jot (eternal flame) is always kind to devotees. She is worshipped as a form of Durga whose name means "the one who bears greens" (shak). Tradition links her with food and nourishment (see the Annapurna Chalisa and Durga Chalisa).
Question: Which sisters of Shakambhari are named in the Chalisa?
Answer: It names Shatakshi beside her, Bheema (the fierce one), Bhramari and Kalratri. Devotees therefore remember her together with these forms of the Mother.
Question: Who are Bhairav, Hanuman and Bhura Dev in this Chalisa?
Answer: It says Bhairav Veer stands before her and has fought many battles with demons, and Hanuman carries a flag and goes with her to the battlefield (see the Bhairav Chalisa and Hanuman Chalisa). It names Laukada (Bhura Dev) as her follower, whose worship comes first, and calls Ganpati the giver of eight siddhis who is worshipped first (see the Ganesh Chalisa).
Question: What battle forms and deeds of the Goddess does the Chalisa mention?
Answer: It says she became Rakt Dantika and killed demons, destroyed Raktabeej and took the Chhinnamastika form. It also says she took the form of a swan (maral) and fed people, and rescued sages through shok paat (a leafy vegetable).
Question: What is the story of Durgamasura and the famine?
Answer: This story is told in the Puranas, not in this Chalisa. According to it, a hundred-year famine struck because of the demon Durgamasura, and the Goddess appeared and fed all beings with vegetables and herbs, which is how she got the name Shakambhari. Details differ between Puranic texts.
Question: When and how should the Shakambhari Chalisa be recited?
Answer: Morning or dusk, with a ghee lamp, and during Shakambhari Navratri (Paush Shukla Ashtami to Purnima) and Chaitra and Sharad Navratri. The Chalisa itself suggests 100 recitations and keeping a lamp lit for nine nights. Offer halwa, puri, coconut, a red chunri and green vegetables or fruit.
