Phalguna Maas Shukla Paksha Amalaki Ekadashi Vrat Katha
॥ Introduction ॥

The Ekadashi that gloriously occurs during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu lunar month of Phalguna is universally celebrated as Amalaki Ekadashi. This incredibly sacred day holds an exalted and premier status in Sanatan Dharma. Centered around the divine Amalaki (Amla) tree, which emerged directly from the supreme energy of Lord Vishnu, this fast possesses the divine capacity to incinerate the heaviest accumulation of sins and securely lead the devotee to the eternal abode of Lord Vishnu (Vishnu Lok).

॥ Importance ॥

The spiritual potency of Phalguna Shukla Amalaki Ekadashi is matchless. Lord Shri Krishna states that this holy fast completely liberates a human soul from the cyclic bondage of sins. Originally revealed by Sage Vashistha to King Mandhata, the mere remembrance of the sacred Amalaki tree bestows the spiritual merit of a cow donation (Godan), touching it doubles the merit, and consuming its fruit triples the blessing. Performing a systematic night vigil (Jagaran) under the tree grants blessings far superior to performing major grand Vedic sacrifices.

॥ Puranic Reference ॥

This dynamic scripture traces its historical lineage to the Dwapar Yuga, where Lord Shri Krishna narrated this divine occurrence to King Yudhishthira. The narrative structurally describes an ancient interaction where King Mandhata asked Sage Vashistha about the cosmic origin of the Amla tree. Sage Vashistha revealed that when Lord Vishnu breathed/spat during a cosmic cycle, a brilliant drop glowing like the moon fell upon the Earth, transforming into the primeval Amalaki tree, inside which all the primary gods, vasus, and cosmic entities permanently reside.

॥ Story ॥

King Yudhishthira said—O Lord Krishna! I have heard the magnificent glory of Vijaya Ekadashi, which grants immense spiritual results. Now, please be merciful and describe the specific name and unique glory of the Ekadashi that falls during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Phalguna.

Lord Shri Krishna replied—O highly fortunate son of Dharma, Yudhishthira! Listen carefully. I will narrate to you a historical occurrence that the great soul Sage Vashistha once described when asked by King Mandhata. The Ekadashi of Phalguna Shukla Paksha is named 'Amalaki'. The strict observance of this pure fast directly grants the attainment of Vishnu Lok (the divine abode of Lord Vishnu).

King Mandhata asked—O best among the twice-born! Please explain to me exactly when and how this 'Amalaki' tree originated on Earth.

Sage Vashistha replied—O highly fortunate King! Listen attentively to how the Amalaki tree manifested on Earth. The Amalaki is a majestic tree that destroys all types of sins. Once, as Lord Vishnu spit, a drop as radiant and glowing as the moon emerged from His divine mouth. That drop fell upon the Earth, and from it, the great Amalaki (Amla) tree was born. It is known as the primeval source of all vegetation on Earth.

During that exact cosmic period, the Supreme Lord created Lord Brahma to manifest the entire world and its populations. From Lord Brahma, all creatures were born—including gods, demons, gandharvas, yakshas, rakshas, nagas, and great sages with completely pure consciousness. One day, these gods and ancient sages arrived at the sacred spot where the Amalaki tree, the beloved of Lord Vishnu, was growing. Seeing its unique form, the gods were filled with absolute wonder. They stared at the tree with intense curiosity, looking at each other and thinking, 'The other standard trees like Plaksha (Pakur) are identical to the previous cosmic cycles and are well known to us, but we do not know the identity of this exceptional tree.'

Seeing them trapped in such intense contemplation, a divine voice echoed from the sky (Akashvani)—'O great sages! This is the supreme Amalaki tree, which is exceptionally dear to Lord Vishnu. The mere remembrance of this tree grants the spiritual merit of donating a cow (Godan). Touching it yields double that merit, and eating its fruit grants three times the spiritual reward. Therefore, one should always endeavor to serve and honor the Amalaki tree. It is declared to be a highly sacred, sin-destroying Vaishnava tree. Lord Vishnu resides at its roots, Lord Brahma resides above it, the Supreme Lord Rudra (Shiva) resides in its trunk, holy sages reside in its primary branches, demigods in its twigs, the Vasus in its leaves, the Marudganas in its flowers, and all the Prajapatis reside within its fruits. The Amalaki tree is the embodiment of all gods. Therefore, it is highly worshipable for all devotees of Lord Vishnu.'

The sages looked toward the sky and asked—O great person speaking from the unmanifest form! How should we understand your identity? Who are you? Are you a demigod or someone else? Please reveal the truth to us.

The celestial voice spoke again—I am that eternal Lord Vishnu, who is the ultimate doer of all elements, the creator of all planetary systems, and whom even highly advanced scholars find extremely difficult to perceive directly.

Hearing these words from the Supreme Lord of all gods, the eyes of those great sages filled with absolute amazement. They immediately began offering beautiful prayers to the primeval Lord, who has no beginning or end.

The sages prayed—We offer our respectful prostrations to the inner soul of all beings, the Supreme Soul (Paramatma). Our continuous salutations to Achyuta, who never slips from His own supreme glory. Salutations over and over again to the boundless Lord. We bow to Lord Damodara, the all-knowing Seer, and the Lord of all sacrifices. O Master of Maya! Prostrations unto You. You are the absolute Sovereign of the universe; we bow to You.

Being highly pleased by the intense prayers offered by the sages, Lord Shri Hari manifested and said—O great sages! What desired boon do you wish to receive from Me?

The sages replied—O Lord! If You are truly satisfied with us, then for the ultimate welfare of humanity, please describe a sacred vow (vrat) that can grant both heavenly prosperity and ultimate spiritual liberation (Moksha).

Lord Vishnu spoke—O sages! In the month of Phalguna, during the bright fortnight, if the Dwadashi tithi joins with the auspicious Pushya Nakshatra, that day becomes exceptionally meritorious and destroys the heaviest sins. O twice-born ones! Listen carefully to the special duties to be performed on that day. On Amalaki Ekadashi, one must approach an Amla tree and maintain a strict night vigil (Jagaran) there. By doing this, a human being is instantly freed from all sins and reaps the spiritual reward equivalent to donating a thousand cows. O Brahmins! This is the most excellent among all fasts, which I have revealed to you.

The sages asked—O Lord! Please explain the exact method of this fast. How is it successfully completed? Who are its presiding deities, what are the offering mantras, how should the holy bath and charities be performed, and what is the exact method of ritual worship? Please describe everything in its factual form.

Lord Vishnu explained—O twice-born ones! Listen attentively to the ultimate method of this vow. On the morning of Ekadashi, after cleaning one's teeth, the devotee must take a firm spiritual vow (Sankalpa) stating: 'O lotus-eyed Lord Pundarikaksha! O infallible Lord Achyuta! I shall remain completely fasting on this Ekadashi day and will break my fast only on the following day. Please keep me under your absolute protection.' After taking this formal vow, the devotee must strictly avoid any interaction or conversation with fallen souls, thieves, hypocrites, sinners, or violators of moral boundaries. Controlling the mind completely, take a holy bath in a sacred river, pond, well, or even at home. Before entering the water, apply sacred mud to the body while chanting the specific earth-cleansing mantra.

Mantra for Applying Mud:

Ashvakrante Rathakrante Vishnukrante Vasundhare।
Mrittike har me paapam janma-kotiyaam samarjitam.॥

(Meaning: O Mother Earth, horses and chariots constantly move over you, and during the Vamana incarnation, Lord Vishnu measured your entire expanse with His divine steps. O sacred mud! Please completely remove all the sins I have accumulated across millions of previous lifetimes.)

Holy Bathing Mantra:

Tvam matah sarva-bhutanam jeevanam tattu rakshakam।
Swedajo-dbhijja jateenaam rasaanaam pataye namah॥
Strato’ham sarva-tirtheshu hrida-prasravaneshu cha।
Nadeeshu devakhateshu idam snanam tu me bhavet॥

(Meaning: O Goddess of Water! O Mother! You are the vital life force for all living entities, protecting even the microscopic creatures born of sweat and vegetation. You are the supreme ruler of all fluids; I bow to you. Today, I have mentally bathed in all sacred pilgrimages, holy pools, streams, rivers, and celestial lakes. May this bath of mine grant the complete spiritual fruit of all those combined pilgrimages.)

A wise devotee should arrange a beautiful golden idol of Lord Parashurama. Depending on one's financial capability, the idol should weigh either one masha or half a masha of pure gold. After taking the holy bath, return home, perform the daily worship and minor fire sacrifices (Havan). After that, gather all the required ritual items and proceed to the location of the Amalaki tree. Thoroughly clean, sweep, and purify the ground surrounding the tree using holy cow dung paste.

On that purified ground, establish a fresh water-filled vessel (Kalash) while chanting scriptural hymns. Drop five precious gems (Pancharatna) and divine fragrances inside the Kalash. Decorate it beautifully with pure white sandalwood paste and place a fresh flower garland around its neck. Light fragrant incense and arrange a rows of glowing ghee lamps to create a highly captivating and divine sight. Also, keep a fresh new umbrella, a pair of shoes, and new clothes ready for charity near the altar.

Place a clean plate over the mouth of the Kalash and fill it completely with divine parched rice grains (Kheel). Over that layer of grains, majestically install the golden idol of Lord Parashurama. Then, perform the step-by-step limb-worship (Anga Puja) of the deity using the following specific mantras:
* Chant 'Vishokaya Namah' to worship His feet.
* Chant 'Vishvarupine Namah' to worship both knees.
* Chant 'Ugraya Namah' to worship the thighs.
* Chant 'Damodaraya Namah' to worship the waist.
* Chant 'Padmanabhaya Namah' to worship the abdomen.
* Chant 'Shrivatsadharine Namah' to worship the chest.
* Chant 'Chakrine Namah' to worship the left arm.
* Chant 'Gadine Namah' to worship the right arm.
* Chant 'Vaikunthaya Namah' to worship the neck.
* Chant 'Yajnamukhaya Namah' to worship the face.
* Chant 'Vishokanidhaye Namah' to worship the nose.
* Chant 'Vasudevaya Namah' to worship the eyes.
* Chant 'Vamanaya Namah' to worship the forehead.
* Chant 'Sarvatmane Namah' to worship all limbs and the head.

After completing this meticulous worship, offer a sacred water oblation (Arghya) to Lord Parashurama with a heart filled with deep devotion, accompanied by fresh Amla fruits. Use the following specific Arghya mantra:

Arghya Mantra:

Namaste devadevesh Jamadagnya namo’stu te।
Grihanarghyam imam dattam amalkya yuta hare॥

(Meaning: O Lord of all gods! O noble son of Jamadagni! O Lord Vishnu in the form of Parashurama! I offer my respectful salutations unto You over and over again. Please accept this sacred Arghya offering presented along with the holy Amalaki fruit.)

Following the worship, spend the entire night maintaining a strict devotional vigil (Jagaran). Pass the night joyfully by participating in divine dancing, singing devotional hymns, playing musical instruments, reading sacred legends, and discussing the glorious pastimes of Lord Vishnu. After that, circumambulate (Parikrama) the Amalaki tree either 108 times or 28 times while chanting the holy names of Lord Vishnu. As dawn arrives, perform the grand automated Aarti of Lord Shri Hari. Worship a qualified Brahmin and respectfully donate all the ritual materials to him. Hand over the Parashurama Kalash, the two sets of new clothes, the shoes, and the umbrella, maintaining the inner consciousness that 'May Lord Vishnu, manifested in the form of Lord Parashurama, be deeply pleased with me.'

Thereafter, touch the sacred Amalaki tree, perform a final circumambulation, and after taking a purifying bath, feed the learned Brahmins with high-quality foods according to proper rituals. Finally, sit down with family members and break your own fast. Listen to the immense spiritual merit obtained by executing this process: the structural fruit that a human being derives from visiting all global pilgrimages and performing all forms of standard charities is easily obtained through this single fast. It yields results far superior to all grand Vedic sacrifices combined; there is absolutely no room for doubt. This fast is the most supreme among all spiritual vows, which I have fully detailed to you.

Sage Vashistha concluded—O Maharaja! After explaining this magnificent method, the Supreme Lord of all gods, Lord Vishnu, instantly disappeared from that spot. Subsequently, all those great sages perfectly executed this fast. O best among kings! You must also perform this sacred ritual with full devotion.

Lord Shri Krishna said—O Yudhishthira! This highly unyielding and powerful fast is the ultimate deliverer of mankind, wiping out all sins completely.

॥ Moral of the Story ॥
  • Nature is an embodiment of the Divine; the primeval Amalaki tree is not merely a piece of vegetation but a celestial entity housing all primary gods, teaching humans to revere nature.
  • The power of systematic vow (Sankalpa); keeping the senses under control and staying away from negative speech or company during spiritual days multiplies inner strength.
  • Seeking universal welfare through rituals; just as the ancient sages did not ask for personal wealth but sought a fast that grants liberation to all humanity, our intentions must be selfless.
  • Charity completes devotion; donating the golden idol, clothing, shoes, and umbrellas to a wise soul ensures that spiritual wealth translates into acts of worldly balance and letting go of attachment.
॥ Vrat & Worship Method ॥
  • On Phalguna Shukla Dashami, consume a single pure vegetarian meal, practice celibacy, and clean the mind of all worldly thoughts.
  • On Ekadashi morning, clean the teeth and take the firm scriptural Sankalpa to fast for the entire day and break it on Dwadashi.
  • Apply sacred mud to the body while chanting the 'Ashvakrante...' mantra, then take a holy bath in a river or at home using the 'Tvam Matah...' hymn.
  • Strictly avoid speaking with deceitful, sinful, or highly negative individuals throughout the fasting period to preserve spiritual energy.
  • Proceed to an Amla (Amalaki) tree, clean the ground beneath it thoroughly, and coat it with fresh cow dung paste.
  • Establish a fresh water Kalash filled with Pancharatna and divine perfumes. Wrap a white sandalwood mark on it and put a flower garland around its neck.
  • Place a vessel filled with parched rice (Kheel) on top of the Kalash and install a small golden idol of Lord Parashurama over it.
  • Perform the specific Anga Puja of Lord Parashurama from feet to head using the designated mantras (e.g., 'Vishokaya Namah', etc.).
  • Offer the formal Arghya along with fresh Amla fruits using the sacred 'Namaste Devadevesha...' mantra.
  • Spend the entire night under or near the tree performing Jagaran through holy songs, instrumental music, and Vishnu stories.
  • Perform 108 or 28 circumambulations (Parikrama) of the Amalaki tree while chanting Lord Vishnu's names.
  • On Dwadashi morning, perform Aarti, worship a qualified Brahmin, and donate the Kalash, idol, clothes, umbrella, and shoes to him.
  • Conclude the fast by feeding the Brahmins first, and then eating a satvik meal with your family members.
॥ Essential Rules for Applying Sacred Mud (Mrittika) ॥
  • Source of Mud: The mud used before bathing should ideally be taken from a clean riverbank, an ant-hill, or the base of a sacred plant like Tulsi.
  • Karmic Cleansing: Applying earth with the Vedic mantra connects the human body back to the primal elements, neutralizing deep cellular negative impressions.
॥ Parana (Breaking the Fast) Method ॥
  • The Amalaki Ekadashi fast must be strictly broken on Dwadashi Tithi after sunrise, ensuring the complete execution of the Brahmin donation rituals.
  • Do not take food during the Hari Vasara period if it extends into the morning. Break the fast using holy water or simple satvik items.
॥ Benefits ॥
  • Guarantees a permanent seat in Vishnu Lok (Vaikuntha) and cleanses the soul of millions of lifetimes of heavy sins.
  • Bestows the immense spiritual merit equivalent to donating thousands of healthy cows (Godan) and visiting all earth pilgrimages.
  • Grants material prosperity, ultimate health, and success, as the Amalaki tree houses Lord Vishnu, Brahma, Rudra, and all Prajapatis.
  • Eliminates internal fears, confusion, and builds unyielding mental fortitude to overcome severe worldly crises.
