Devotion, Destruction of Sins, Health, Prosperity, Offspring Gain, Liberation, Navratri Glory
ą„„ Introduction ą„„
The sacred festival of Navratri is celebrated during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu months of Chaitra, Ashvin, Magha, and Ashadha. Dedicated entirely to Supreme Goddess Durga (Adi Shakti), this sacred nine-day observance holds an incomparable and supreme status in Sanatan Dharma. The Navratri fast possesses the ultimate divine power to destroy all accumulated sins, dispel bodily illnesses, eradicate poverty, fulfill all material and spiritual desires, and bestow ultimate liberation (Moksha).
ą„„ Importance ą„„
The spiritual excellence of the Navratri Vrat is supreme. Lord Brahma states that there is no other sacred vow in all the three worlds that surpasses the potency of Navratri in granting sons, wealth, wisdom, health, and freedom from all bondages. Observing this fast with devotion yields the divine spiritual merit equivalent to performing the grand Vedic Ashvamedha Yajna. Any charity, donation, or sacred japa performed during these nine days multiplies millions of times in merit.

The holy narrative of this great fast is rooted in the celestial dialogue between Brihaspati, the preceptor of the Devas, and Lord Brahma. To explain the origin and supreme fruits of Navratri, Lord Brahma dynamically revealed the historic account of a pious maiden named Sumatiādaughter of Brahmin Anath in Peethat cityādemonstrating how inadvertent fasting in past lives combined with sincere faith in Goddess Durga cures incurable ailments like leprosy and transforms human destiny.

ą„„ Story ą„„
Brihaspati Ji saidāO Brahma Ji! You are immensely wise, the foremost knower of all scriptures and all four Vedas. O Lord! Please hear my plea. Why is the fast and festival of Navratri celebrated during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of Chaitra, Ashvin, Magha, and Ashadha months? O Bhagwan! What is the fruit of this fast? In what manner is it proper to perform it, and who performed this fast first in ancient times? Please describe all this to me in detail.
Hearing this question of Brihaspati Ji, Brahma Ji began to speakāO Brihaspati! Desiring the welfare of all living beings, you have asked a very auspicious question. Those human beings who meditate upon Goddess Durga, Mahadevi, Surya (the Sun God), and Lord Narayana who fulfill all heartfelt desires, are truly blessed and fortunate. This Navratri fast fulfills all human aspirations. By observing it, the seeker of a son obtains a son, the seeker of wealth attains prosperity, the seeker of knowledge attains education and wisdom, and the seeker of happiness attains peace and joy. By observing this fast, the illness of a diseased person is cured, and a person suffering in prison is freed from all bondage. All adversities of a human being are destroyed, and all kinds of wealth and auspicious fortune come to reside in one's home. A barren woman (Bandhya) or a woman with secondary infertility (Kak Bandhya) is blessed with a noble son by performing this fast. By observing this fast which dispels all sins, there is no desire that cannot be accomplished.
The person who, despite obtaining this rare human body, does not observe the Navratri fast, turns away from the service of parents, incurs great sin, and suffers numerous miseries. Many afflictions and diseases arise in that person's body, and they are deprived of the happiness of having children. In this manner, such a foolish person endures manifold sorrows. A foolish person who neglects this fast becomes devoid of wealth and food grains, wanders thirsty and hungry upon the earth, and becomes mute. A married woman (Suhagin) who mistakenly neglects this fast becomes separated from her husband and suffers various kinds of miseries. If the person observing the fast cannot fast for the entire day, they should consume a meal once a day and listen to the sacred Navratri Vrat Katha on that day along with relatives and family. O Brihaspati! I shall now narrate to you the sacred history of the one who performed this great fast first. Listen attentively.
Hearing these words of Brahma Ji, Brihaspati Ji saidāO Brahma Ji! Please narrate to me the history of this fast that brings welfare to humanity; I am listening with complete concentration. Kindly bestow your divine grace upon me, who has taken refuge in you.
Brahma Ji saidāIn a delightful and beautiful city named Peethat, there lived a pious Brahmin named Anath. He was an ardent devotee of Goddess Bhagwati Durga. To him was born an exceptionally beautiful daughter named Sumati, who possessed all noble virtues, appearing as if she were the very first sublime creation of Lord Brahma. That maiden Sumati, playing in her childhood with her friends at home, began to grow day by day just as the lovely phases of the moon grow during Shukla Paksha. Her father used to perform daily worship and sacrificial fire (Homa) of Goddess Durga. At that time, Sumati would also remain present there with strict regularity. One day, Sumati became deeply absorbed in playing with her companions and did not attend the morning worship of Mother Bhagwati. Seeing this carelessness of his daughter, her father became furious and said to herā'O daughter! Today in the morning you did not attend the worship of Bhagwati; therefore, I shall marry you to a poor leper!'
Hearing these words of her enraged father, Sumati felt great grief and said to her fatherā'O Father! I am your daughter. I am under your authority in every way; do as you please. You may marry me to a sick person, a leper, or anyone else as per your wish; I have complete faith that whatever is written in my destiny will surely come to pass.
Man contemplates countless desires, but only that happens which the Creator has written in destiny. Whatever actions one performs, one receives fruits strictly according to those deeds, because performing actions is under human control, but the fruit lies under the authority of destiny and God. Just as dry grass thrown into fire makes it blaze even brighter, similarly, hearing the fearless words spoken by his daughter, the Brahmin grew even more furious. Thereupon, he married his daughter to a leper, and speaking with extreme rage, said to his daughterāGo, go away quickly! Suffer the fruits of your actions. Let us see what you can achieve by relying solely on your destiny!'
Hearing the bitter words spoken by her father, Sumati reflected within her heartā'Alas! Great is my misfortune that I have received such a husband.' Contemplating her grief in this manner, Sumati departed for the dense forest with her husband, and they spent that night with great hardship in that terrifying wilderness filled with Kusha grass. Seeing the miserable plight of that poor innocent girl, Mother Bhagwati, by the power of her past merits, manifested directly before Sumati and saidā'O humble Brahmani! I am immensely pleased with you; you may ask for whatever boon you desire. When pleased, I grant all cherished desires.'
Hearing these words of Goddess Durga, the Brahmani saidā'Who are you who has become pleased with me? Please reveal all this to me and bless this humble servant with your merciful glance.' Hearing the Brahmani's words, the Goddess repliedā'I am Adi Shakti (the Primordial Cosmic Energy), and I am Brahma-Vidya and Saraswati. When pleased, I remove the sorrow of living beings and grant them happiness. O Brahmani! I am pleased with you due to the virtue of your past life.
I will narrate to you the account of your previous birth; listen! In your previous birth, you were the wife of a Nishada (hunter/tribesman) and were an extremely devoted and chaste wife. One day, your Nishada husband committed theft. Because of that theft, soldiers captured both of you and imprisoned you in a jail. Those people did not give food or water to you or your husband. In this manner, during the days of Navratri, you neither ate anything nor drank any water; thus, an unintentional complete fast of Navratri was observed by you for nine full days. O Brahmani! Pleased with the spiritual power of the fast that occurred in those days, I am granting you your desired boon. Ask whatever your heart desires.'
Hearing these words of Goddess Durga, the Brahmani saidā'If you are truly pleased with me, O Mother Durga, I bow down before you. Kindly remove the leprosy of my husband.' The Goddess saidā'Offer the merit of just one day of the fast you performed in those past days to cure your husband's leprosy; by my divine grace, your husband will become completely free of leprosy and his body will turn radiant like gold.'
Brahma Ji saidāHearing the words of the Goddess, that Brahmani became overjoyed, and with the desire to heal her husband, she said, 'So be it.' Instantly, by the grace of Goddess Bhagwati Durga, her husband's body became free of leprosy and was endowed with immense radiance, before whose brilliance even the beauty of the moon grew dim. Seeing her husband's delightful and magnificent form, the Brahmani understood the Goddess to be supremely powerful and offered heartfelt praise: 'O Durga! You remove all distress, eradicate the afflictions of the three worlds, dispel all sorrows, make diseased persons healthy and disease-free, grant desired objects when pleased, and destroy wicked evil-doers. You alone are the Mother and Father of the entire universe. O Amba! Without any fault of mine, my father married me, a helpless maiden, to a leper and cast me out of the house. Cast out by him, I was wandering upon the earth. You alone have rescued me from this ocean of calamities. O Goddess! I bow to you. Protect this humble soul.'
Brahma Ji saidāO Brihaspati! In this manner, Sumati praised the Goddess from the depths of her heart. Hearing her praise, the Goddess was deeply satisfied and said to the Brahmaniā'O Brahmani! A highly intelligent, wealthy, glorious, and sense-controlled son named Udalaya will soon be born to you.' Saying this, the Goddess spoke again to the Brahmaniā'O Brahmani, ask for whatever other desired blessing you wish for.'
Hearing these words of Goddess Durga, Sumati saidā'O Bhagwati Durga! If you are pleased with me, kindly explain to me the proper method of observing Navratri. O Merciful Mother! Describe in full detail the procedure and fruits of the Navratri fast by which you become pleased.'
Hearing these words of the Brahmani, Durga saidā'O Brahmani! I shall explain to you the method of the Navratri fast which dispels all sins, by hearing which a person is freed from all sins and attains supreme liberation (Moksha). From the Pratipada of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Ashvin, observe the fast systematically for nine days. If one cannot fast the entire day, consume food once a day. Consult learned Brahmins to perform Ghatasthapana (Kalash installation), prepare a small altar bed (Vatika), and water it daily. Install the images or idols of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati, and worship them daily with prescribed rituals, offering Arghya with flowers according to proper rules.
By offering Arghya with Bijora flowers, one attains beauty and radiance. Nutmeg brings glory, raisins ensure the fulfillment of all undertakings, Amla brings happiness, and bananas bestow fine ornaments. After offering Arghya with fruits in this manner, perform Havan according to scriptures. Perform Havan with sugar (Khand), pure ghee, wheat, honey, barley (Jau), sesame seeds (Til), Bimba fruit, coconut, raisins (Dakh), and Kadamba. Offering wheat in Havan brings wealth and Lakshmi; Kheer and Champa flowers bestow riches; leaves bring radiance and joy; Amla brings fame; bananas grant a son; lotus flowers bring royal honor; and raisins bring happiness and prosperity. Offering Havan with sugar, ghee, coconut, honey, barley, sesame seeds, and fruits fulfills all desired aspirations. The person observing the fast, after performing Havan with this method, should bow down to the Acharya with extreme humility and offer generous Dakshina for the accomplishment of the Yajna.
Whoever performs this great fast according to the method explained above accomplishes all their heartfelt desires without the slightest doubt. Whatever charity and donations are given during these nine days multiply millions of times. Observing this Navratri fast grants the divine spiritual fruit equivalent to performing the Ashvamedha Yajna. O Brahmani! Perform this excellent fast, which fulfills all desires, at a pilgrimage place, a temple, or in your own home according to these rules.'
Brahma Ji saidāO Brihaspati! Having explained the method and fruits of the fast to the Brahmani, the Goddess disappeared. Any man or woman who performs this fast with deep devotion enjoys all worldly happiness in this life and ultimately attains rare liberation (Moksha). O Brihaspati! I have narrated to you the sacred glory of this rare fast.
Hearing these words of Brahma Ji, Brihaspati Ji was thrilled with ecstatic joy and said to Brahma Jiā'O Brahma Ji! You have shown immense mercy upon me by narrating this nectar-like glory of the Navratri fast. O Lord! Who else besides you could narrate such supreme glory?' Hearing these words of Brihaspati Ji, Brahma Ji saidā'O Brihaspati! You have asked about this extraordinary fast for the welfare of all living beings, therefore you are truly blessed. This Goddess Shakti is the protector and sustainer of all worlds; who can fully comprehend the divine glory of this Mahadevi?'
ą„„ Moral of the Story ą„„
- Absolute faith in God transforms destiny; even the severest curse and suffering are dissolved through genuine devotion.
- Devotion performed even unknowingly in sacred times yields boundless merits across lifetimes.
- Righteous duty and patience in adversity invoke direct divine grace from Mother Adi Shakti.
- Strict adherence to scriptural worship methods, charity, and Havan brings spiritual elevation and fulfillment of all desires.
ą„„ Durga Saptashati Havan Vidhan ą„„
During Navratri, on the night of Ashtami, Havan is performed using the sacred Durga Saptashati. According to auspicious astrological timings, perform Ganesh remembrance, Sankalpa, Ganapati Matrika, Navagraha, Rudra, and Kalash Pujan systematically, followed by the worship of the Goddess, Brahma Pujan, and Brahmin Varana. Afterwards, the Acharya should recite the Kavacha, Argala Stotra, Keelaka, and Ratri Suktam.
Perform Kushakandika and offer oblations starting from "Prajapataye Swaha" to Varuna, Ganapati, and the Navagrahas. Thereafter, begin the Havan with the Navarna Mantra and the first chapter of Durga Saptashati. Offer oblations for every single mantra through all 13 chapters. Because the complete Havan method is not written in ordinary books, ordinary priests are often unable to perform Havan systematically according to strict rules.
ą„„ Important Rule at Chapter Conclusion ą„„
Iti shabdo harellakshmeem badha kulavinaashakah ą„¤
Adhyaayo haret praanaan maarqandeyaadikam vadet ą„„
Uttering the word 'Iti' at the end of a chapter destroys wealth (Lakshmi); uttering 'Badha' destroys the family lineage; uttering 'Adhyaya' destroys lifespan. Therefore, at the end of each chapter, take water in an Achamani and release it while chanting:
"Om Jai Jai Markandeya Purane Savarnike Manvantare Devi Mahatmye Satyah Santu Mama (Yajamanasya Va) Kamah Shri."
ą„„ Benefits ą„„
- Destroys chronic illnesses, severe ailments, physical curses, and leprosy.
- Blesses childless women with virtuous, long-living, and highly prosperous offspring.
- Eradicates poverty, accumulates continuous wealth, and ensures high prestige and social respect.
- Protects from enemies, accidents, and prison bondages, yielding spiritual merit equal to the Ashvamedha Yajna and granting Moksha.
