About Shri Ekadashi Ki Aarti

Ekadashi Ki Aarti, "Jai Ekadashi Mata," is a devotional song to Ekadashi Devi, the divine power of the eleventh lunar day, which is sacred to Lord Vishnu. It is also a handy list: it names every Ekadashi of the year, month by month, so it works as a song and as a reminder of the Ekadashi calendar. A table of all Ekadashis, each linked to its Katha, is given below the Aarti.

The Puranic background. In the Puranic tradition (told in the Padma Purana and other texts), a female power appeared from Lord Vishnu''s body and destroyed the demon Mura. Vishnu was pleased, named her Ekadashi and gave the boon that those who keep the fast on her day are freed from sin. This is why the first Ekadashi in the list is called Utpanna, meaning "born."

What the verses say. The opening lines hail Ekadashi Mata, who gives strength and liberation to one who keeps Vishnu''s vrat, and who is described in the shastras. The verses then run through the year. Margashirsha has Utpanna and Mokshada, Paush has Saphala and Putrada, and Magh has Shattila and Jaya. Phalguna has Vijaya and Amalaki, Chaitra has Papmochani and Kamada, and Vaishakha has Varuthini and Mohini.

Jyeshtha has Apara and Nirjala, the Ekadashi kept without even water. Ashadha has Yogini and Devshayani, after which Vishnu is believed to sleep and Chaturmas begins. Shravan has Kamika and Putrada, Bhadrapada has Aja and Parivartini (Padma), Ashwin has Indira and Papankusha, and Kartik has Rama and Devutthani, when Vishnu is believed to awake (see the Tulsi Chalisa for Tulsi Vivah). That makes twenty-four. The Aarti then adds the Laund (Adhik) month, which has Padmini in the Shukla Paksha and Parama (which the Aarti calls Padma) in the Krishna Paksha. The closing verse says that one who sings the Aarti with devotion receives the wished-for fruit and a place in heaven.

A note on months. The Aarti follows the purnimanta calendar of North India, so the month names can look one month ahead in the amanta calendar of Gujarat, Maharashtra and the south. The Aarti is a song of devotion, and the fast is best kept according to one''s health.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Who is Ekadashi Mata?
Answer: In the Puranic tradition, Ekadashi is the divine power that appeared from the body of Lord Vishnu and defeated the demon Mura. Pleased, Vishnu gave her the name Ekadashi and a boon for those who keep the fast on her day. The Aarti sings her glory and names every Ekadashi of the year (see the Vishnu Chalisa and the Utpanna Ekadashi Katha).

Question: Which Ekadashis does the Aarti name, and in what order?
Answer: It goes month by month: Utpanna and Mokshada (Margashirsha), Saphala and Putrada (Paush), Shattila and Jaya (Magh), Vijaya and Amalaki (Phalguna), Papmochani and Kamada (Chaitra), Varuthini and Mohini (Vaishakha), Apara and Nirjala (Jyeshtha), Yogini and Devshayani (Ashadha), Kamika and Putrada (Shravan), Aja and Parivartini (Bhadrapada), Indira and Papankusha (Ashwin), Rama and Devutthani (Kartik). That makes 24. It then adds Padmini and Padma (Parama) of the Laund (Adhik) month. The table on this page links each one to its Katha.

Question: Why do the month names look one month ahead of my calendar?
Answer: The Aarti follows the purnimanta calendar of North India, where the month ends at the full moon. In the amanta calendar of Gujarat, Maharashtra and the south, the Krishna Paksha Ekadashis fall in the previous month name. Please follow your local panchang for the date.

Question: Which Ekadashi is the hardest and which is the most special?
Answer: Nirjala Ekadashi (Jyeshtha Shukla) is kept without even water, and Devshayani (Ashadha Shukla) marks the start of Chaturmas. Devutthani Ekadashi (Kartik Shukla) is the day Vishnu is believed to wake, when Tulsi Vivah is held in many homes (see the Tulsi Chalisa).

Question: Which Ekadashis come only once in about three years?
Answer: Padmini and Parama, which fall only in an Adhik (Laund) month. The rest of the 24 come every year.

Question: Must I keep a full fast to sing the Aarti?
Answer: No. The Aarti can be sung with or without a fast. Those who are pregnant, elderly or unwell, or who take regular medicines, should keep the fast according to their health and a doctor''s advice, and may take fruit or milk.
